CASE STUDY: Spatial Distance to Fault

This case study outlines Transpower's need to acquire quick, accurate, fault location data for their 11,803 km of high voltage lines.

PROBLEM

Transpower, New Zealand’s state owned electric power transmission enterprise, required quick, accurate, fault location data for their 11,803 km of high voltage lines. Fault location data was required to be sent in near real-time to their ESRI geospatial system.

SOLUTION

Dimension Software designed and implemented a PI software solution to calculate complex fault locations based on live SCADA feeds and impedance data stored within Transpower’s Oracle databases.

Data is sent to the ESRI Geo Event Processor where it is spatially enriched and displayed along side weather and lightning data. The spatial components were developed by e-Spatial.

Grid control room staff have moved from clunky spreadsheets to a modern decision support tool that presents relevant information that helps users make the right decision, in the right time to help keep the lights on.
